The Teachings of Jesus in Luke: Healing under another banner

John answered, “Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him, because he does not follow with us.” But Jesus said to him, “Do not stop him; for whoever is not against you is for you.” ~ Luke 9:49-50

I'm a human being first and foremost, and as such I'm for whoever or whatever benefits humanity as a whole. ~ Malcolm X

You've probably heard (more than once and in many contexts) this aphorism: "If you're not for me, you're against me."

Later in Luke, Jesus does say something similar to this. But here what we get is the opposite really.

Instead, Jesus comes for the healing and wholeness of all of humanity, and as such, sees that healing and wholeness can come from unexpected places.

There is a idea for some that in Christianity our goal is to save people from hell - to makes sure their theology is OK.

To not pray with someone who isn't Christian (or Catholic or Protestant or Lutheran, etc).

To see the "other" as wrong and thus not worth learning from. Or seeing them only as someone you need to correct.

To write off someone for their beliefs.

To not listen to someone because of their orthodoxy or lack there-of.

Instead Jesus invites us to take part in relationship and healing in all forms and with all who seek truth, love, peace, and wholeness.

Jesus wasn't so concerned with what name this man was casting out demons under. He didn't so much care that healing came under a different banner.

He cared instead that healing DID come. And by this man healing others, that made him part of the relationship Jesus calls everyone to.

Prayer: Lord, let me see your helpers in whatever form they come so that we can all work together for the healing of your world. Amen
