God in Times of Sorrow

A new heart I will give you, and a new spirit I will put within you; and I will remove from your body the heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. ~ Ezekiel 36:26

Heartbreak is the unpreventable, the natural outcome of caring for people and things over which we have no control; of holding in our affections those who inevitably move beyond our line of sight. Heartbreak begins the moment we are asked to let go but cannot. ~ David Whyte, Consolations

Heartbreak begins the moment you realize your heart is made of flesh and not stone.

It is unpreventable. It is inevitable.

It often comes at the most inopportune times (as if there was an opportune time! But some times are more inopportune than others).

Sometimes heartbreak comes when we've missed our chance to fix something.

Sometimes it comes when we are still recovering from another.

Sometimes it comes from an intentional slight.

Sometimes it comes from a thoughtless friend.

Sometimes it comes when we are forced to be inside and can't see the longed for new grandchild.

Sometimes it comes violently.

Sometimes it comes all to easily.

But what is the alternative?

There are times I wish my heart was of stone. Times I wish things didn't hurt so terribly because I have a heart of flesh.

But what would life be then?

It is likely your heart will break sometime in the future. Maybe that future is even now.

But it is through that heart of flesh that God calls us. Calls me. Calls you.

It is through that heart of flesh that love moves us.

And it is through that heart of flesh that we can heal the heartbreak of others.

Prayer: Create in me a heart of flesh to both love deeply and be an instrument of healing for the world. Amen
