God in Times of Sorrow

“Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” ~ Matthew 11:28-30

Perhaps home is not a place but simply an irrevocable condition. ~ James Baldwin

This passage from Matthew is the one I think I've heard more than any other (except perhaps for Psalm 23) when words of comfort are needed.

It is the one at least that I turn to the most often.

I turn to it even when in times like these, it doesn't really feel like Jesus' yoke is easy, or his burden light.

I turn to it because even when I may not feel it, I know that this condition that Jesus promises is a place.

A place called home.

It is a place we are called to. It is a place that God desires for us.

It is a place, as James Baldwin says, that is an irrevocable condition. It is what IS. Even when we can't see it.

It cannot be taken away from us.

As you shelter in the place where you stay, know that the place that is home is never away from you.

It will be there. Always.

Prayer: You are my home, O God. Shelter me from the storm. Amen
