Blessed to be a Blessing: Blessings not Curses

Contribute to the needs of the saints; extend hospitality to strangers.

Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly; do not claim to be wiser than you are. Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all. If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. ~ Romans 12:13-18

Remember that "love your enemies" stuff from Jesus?

Well, says Paul, don't just love them. Bless them.

There are many texts in scripture that might make us uncomfortable because they sound as if we are meant to be a doormat for someone.

Yet that's not what Paul is saying here. When we bless rather than curse those who hurt us, we aren't telling them it is OK to do hurt us. We aren't normalizing it.

We in fact are showing them a better way. We can stop violence against us and still bless the ones who are hurting us. We can bless instead of curse.

Knowing that blessings are meant to be shared. And maybe, just maybe, that blessing will end up sitting with them a while and help end the cycle of anger.

Lord, help me to take the many blessings I have from you and share them with others for the ongoing blessing of your entire creation. Amen

Thoughts for engagment:

When is a time you confronted someone angry with love? What happened?
