Blessed to be a Blessing: Fair Balance
I do not mean that there should be relief for others and pressure on you, but it is a question of a fair balance between your present abundance and their need, so that their abundance may be for your need, in order that there may be a fair balance. As it is written,
“The one who had much did not have too much,
and the one who had little did not have too little.” ~ 2 Corinthians 8:13-15
I'm not sure there is a more succinct explanation in scripture for a just and balanced economic system.
A fair balance. That's what we are called to. Not to have too much, not to have too little.
We seem out of balance in this country now, don't we? (well, not just now...)
Fair and balanced has never been the way of national and global economies. But it was the way of early Christians. It was one of the things that people noticed about them in surprise.
It was - is - what Christians are called toward.
We are meant not just to be stewards of our resources, but of each other. When one has too much, they share their blessings to bless others.
When one has too little, those blessings are meant to be shared with them.
That's what blessings are for: to bless, and bless, and bless until a fair balance of blessed disciples serve together in community to further bless the world so that all of God's creation can ultimately be fair and balanced as well.
Thoughts for engagement:
- How does the idea of fair and balanced seem to you?
- What are the ways we are being called to live into a world that is fair and balanced?
and the one who had little did not have too little.” ~ 2 Corinthians 8:13-15

Lord, help me to take the many blessings I have from you and share them with others for the ongoing blessing of your entire creation. Amen
